Day 5

Blijf op de hoogte en volg Noa

“We want to reduce the noise produced by the airports by..” the representatives of all English airports said at the conference about the environment while phones were buzzing and the airplanes were also making some noise.

The day started with a freshly baked croissant and a bus drive with people that have their music turned on too loud. I guess I should start investing in producing hearing aids here in England. I’d probably become a millionaire here if every person with their music turned on too loud would go deaf. After the bus ride to the beat of yeah yeah yeah we arrived at Vanderlande where I started the day with Project management. I learned that it basically is to estimate and calculate the price of goods and services. For example when new conveyers are needed it is written down for how much the office in Veghel wants to produce it, for how many the Heathrow office wants to sell it and for how much the client wants to buy it. The project manager also calculates how much time is needed to finish a project. It is estimated to be finished around 2017 because they can’t change all conveyers at once. They do have a mirror image of the whole system so that if something goes wrong, they still have the mirror image to keep the system running. Because the time needed is calculated, you can also see for how many hours you need certain employees.

After that I went to a conference about environmental problems that were mainly about the noise produced by airports. Even though the noise has been reduced, the complaints have increased. This is mainly because it has been made easier to complain. Vanderlande attended this conference because it sponsored it. So they had a little stand there. I was happy that I wore black jeans, because everyone wore fancy clothes. I also had to wear I pass that showed that I was actually allowed to be there. It was quite interesting to hear the ideas of different airports. Although one smaller airport had only like ten complaints in a year about the noise. So it is more in the interest of the bigger airports to reduce the noise.
Then after the break I made some purchase order requests. That is requesting to use the money of Vanderlande to buy some goods the people need on site for instance. There are special codes for every project that are filled into the form. If it’s more than five grand it’s checked by two people, if it’s less it’s checked by one person. The request contains all the information about where the goods need to be bought and what they are needed for and where. It was interesting to do that, but I am not such a talent at typing. So I had to often retype things. But luckily they are even patient with people like me that type one word or number per minute.
Then I went to the reception and learned what they do there. They book hotels for employees, they take phone calls, they buy food, drinks and stationery and other things. My inner six year old came out when I was allowed to press on the button to let cars or people in. There are also some people that come for someone so the receptionist tells them where to go. But there also once came a man that didn’t come for anyone but just wanted to use the toilet. That wasn’t allowed and he became quite aggressive. So there had to come someone to take him away. So as a receptionist you have a number of responsibilities.

After work Lotte and I went to a pub and went back to our hotel. From our hotel we went to Windsor for dinner. Mainly because they all told us at Vanderlande that it was really nice there. It indeed was and Windsor castle looked really beautiful. The flag was raised high on the castle, which meant that the queen was home. There also are a lot of cute little streets in Windsor and the Thames looks really beautiful in the evening. It was definitely worth the visit!
